Micah's Story

Micah's Story

Micah Peter was born on January 7, 2002.

In Nov of 2007,  we found a growth in his belly. It was big! After an MRI, it was decided that he would have surgery to remove the growth. The tumor was malignant. After further testing, he was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma. His first surgery did get the whole primary tumor out, but it had spread to his lungs and liver.

So on Dec 28, 2007,  he started chemo. Along with 15 months of chemo, he had 30 radiation treatments.

Micah  finished treatment in February of 2009 and was cancer free.

On December 7, 2009, a tumor was found in his lungs. After discussion with the doctors we all decided not to do heavy treatment the second time around. We had no new drugs to try. The probability of the drugs we had used the first time working was very slim. So they gave Micah a mild drug with the intent of shrinking the cancer a little so we could do surgery. That was the best case scenario. If the tumor didn't shrink we were hoping it would slow the growth and possibly keep him comfortable for longer. At this point his breathing was labored and he was having pain in his lungs.

The drug did not shrink the tumor. It continued to grow. I do believe that it slowed the growth. On March 22, 2010, we were informed that the tumor was starting to grow at an increased rate. We had to make the decision whether to have surgery within days and try to remove the tumor or stop treatment all together.

We made the decision to have surgery. Three days later, Micah went in and had a good portion of this left lung removed. It was so hard on his body, but it was amazing how well he healed.

Since then, he has had scans every 3 months and is presently cancer free.

The doctors expect the cancer to come back, but we know God is bigger than the statistics. God could choose for Micah not to have cancer again.

Above, I just wrote the facts. It is odd for me to do that. Micah's story is so much more than facts. Our family has experienced heart break and devastation, but we have also experienced amazing blessings from our loving Father in heaven.

We don't know what the future holds. Micah could go to be with Jesus in as little as 3 months or he could live until he is 80. Only God knows. But we do trust God with our future and know that regardless of what happens, He has planned it from the beginning of time and will do what He thinks is best for our family.
